Bird Park’s Getting a Shine: 100 Years of Heart and Hometown Magic

Kankakee Valley Park District Commissioner James Frey walks us through the Summer of 2025 Bird Park facelift. Here is what he has to say:

Well now, a full hundred years of parks. A century filled with picnics, playground laughter, and hometown pride. That’s how long the Kankakee Valley Park District’s been tending these green patches of joy and giving folks a place to breathe a little easier. And wouldn’t you know, we’re marking the occasion with a proper celebration: not with confetti and speeches (though there’ll be some of that, sure), but with the kind of lasting gift only a century can earn—renovations made with care, for the next hundred years to come.

Let’s take a walk through Bird Park, shall we? She’s the heartwood of this whole operation—an old friend stepping proud into the future.

What’s New in the Nest

A sneak peek at the Bird Park splash pad-to-be.

First thing you’ll notice is that playground, shiny as a new penny and twice as cheerful. Been open since May 9, and the kids have been giving it a proper introduction—running, climbing, laughing like bells in the breeze. Just down the way, the Meditation Garden has bloomed into a quiet corner of peace, wrapped in a soft walking path. Perfect for folks who want to slow down and let the world catch up.

Now, the Splash Pad—that’s still under construction as of today, on account of needing a whole new water line and electric. But good news: the crew just rolled back into town and started pouring concrete again. If the weather’s kind and luck’s on our side, we’re lookin’ at 2–3 weeks till the water’s splashin’ and the summer time memories are flowing.

There’s more, too:
- A new concrete pad and trees down by the Bird Park Ballfield, making shade and space for stories yet to come.
- The Band Shell area’s had a glow-up: new concrete walkways for easy strollin’, benches for sittin’, and landscaping that sings soft harmony with every breeze.

A Little Extra from the Folks at KVPD

Of course, none of this magic happens without the fine folks at the Park District putting in elbow grease and heart. Alongside the grant work, KVPD’s been rollin’ up its sleeves:

- Public restrooms got a full remodel and are lookin’ sharp.
- Pavilion #1 is getting its roof patched up, a fresh coat of paint, and a new concrete path so every neighbor can visit with ease.
- Benches are comin’ soon, set to be installed next week.
- Landscaping and riverbank cleanup will also kick off shortly—helpin’ Mother Nature look her Sunday best.

Updates have happened to the bathrooms, playground, and more.

When’s the Ribbon Gettin’ Cut?

Now, I know some of y’all were eyein’ July 23 for the big dedication ceremony—and that was the plan. But with the Splash Pad still finding its feet, the team’s decided to hold a beat. Staff had a good talk this week, and we’re leanin’ toward an early August unveiling, or maybe even tying it in with our August concert, when the air’s sweet with music and folks are already gathered.

Whenever it lands, you can bet your last lemonade that it’ll be a celebration worth showin’ up for.

A Park That Remembers, A Park That Dreams

Bird Park ain’t just a stretch of grass and trees. She’s a living scrapbook—one that holds echoes of first steps, little league cheers, and Sunday strolls. And now, with these new changes, she’s ready for a fresh batch of memories.

One hundred years is a long time. But it ain’t the end of the story—it’s the start of a new chapter. So come see what’s blooming. Sit a spell. Watch a child’s face light up at the splash of water or the swing of a playground gate. This is your park, your story, your legacy.

And if you listen close, you just might hear the land whisper back: “Thank You.”
